100 Years of Solitude
Gabriel García Márquez
This design aims to reflect the magical realism of the novel and emphasize García Márquez's use of symbolism in telling the multi-generational story of the Buendía family in Macondo.
The illustration features a Buendía family crest and utilizes symbols from the novel alongside abstract forms to represent the generational traits and interconnected fate of the Buendía family. The hardback cover was designed to appear as a treasured, passed-down family heirloom, akin to old photo albums.
This cover was primarily inspired by the work of Hilma af Klint, an artist whose work explored the interconnectedness of all forms of life and who developed an artistic language incorporating symbolism, organic forms, colour, and abstraction.
